H.264 isn't efficient though. AV1 (and even H.265) are anywhere from 20-50% more space efficient for the same visual quality.

AAC vs Opus is a little bit more debated, but on average should outperform AAC.

The problem with AV1 is it requires a massive amount of compute resources. This affects both recording (encoding) and playback (decoding) and certainly affects editing. My AMD RX 480 (8 GB) card doesn't even support AV1 encoding too.

Being able to edit without lag is really important, also keeping your CPU load reasonably low when recording is important to avoid dropped frames, or your recording streams becoming out of sync (ie. a webcam video with audio recorded from another input device while you record your desktop).

I noticed on Linux, if I do anything CPU or disk intensive while recording (even with an SSD), I often see these things get out of sync at the point of load. It's an easy fix usually by just cutting the video where it starts to get out of sync and shifting the audio track over ~200-300ms, but it's something that could happen many times so it becomes an issue in the end. I recorded thousands of videos on Windows and never had this problem but it happens every few videos on Linux just doing casual screenshare videos.

AAC vs Opus is similar, except audio related.

In general when recording videos I usually use x264 as mkv which is CPU bound because it produces a much better looking video vs using h264. That's using a bit rate and other settings that tries to balance quality with low disk space.

I don't really get the golf course hate.

We need more green spaces, we need people to be active. Golf is a fairly quite sport, animals do foster around the greenery with golf courses. I would much rather a golf course than hot concrete everywhere.

I'm not hating on golf. My grandfather would be appalled! In crowded urban areas they don't work so well anymore. And I'm also not against using our resources for human pleasure!

Golf courses are not green spaces, come on now. They are most often limited in their access and devoid of greenery native to the area or that supports pollinators. Grass does not equal green space, and certainly not the flavor of green that is present in golf courses. The alternative to a golf course is not hot concrete either, that's a false dichotomy.

More and more people are getting caught up in weird echo chambers, extremist groups, and spewing misinformation. The amount of pure slop on Facebook, either for engagement or manipulation is so high, there is more fake content on FB than real content. The conspiracy side of me believes the CIA is deliberately forcing us against each other, but even if no underlying entity is behind this, the same outcome is happening. This is a byproduct of both Social Media & Generative AI.

Whilst true, security will improve rapidly again. Potentially via AI, potentially via other technologies.

If its easy enough to find exploits, its likely similarly easy to scan code for exploits, or use AI-based anti-virus technologies. The only thing holding us back is the cost of compute. We can't all run the latest models against everything.

Not what that means, at least not on a general basis.

I'm yet to see a modern car with "good tech", the options tend to be:

- Mediocre tech at best.

- Awful tech at worse.

That’s where CarPlay comes in, the tech doesn’t matter. Your phone has good navigation right? Good messages, good music. So just use that. Then it doesn’t really matter how awful the car infotainment is.

Even “good” infotainment (tesla) is inferior to CarPlay in many ways, because it’s not your phone. You don’t get your maps app with everything magically synced and working.

I don't think Apple Carplay nor Android Audo are good technology either though. They both appear as an afterthought and are completely isolated from the car.

If M-DISCs were caught in a fire, I don't think they are readable either.
