I don't have a problem with AI and can't stand the anti-AI brigade, but... this is the worst thing I have ever seen in my life.

This specific type of garbage is exactly what arms the anti-AI critics with valid arguments. We should really wait a few years for the technology to mature before releasing these kinds of projects into the cultural sphere.

The article is not about video quality.

My first thought was "we'll be seeing a lot more of this sort of thing, we're so fucked" but then found myself being quite amused by the AI-glitching mistakes in the GPT 5.6 $25 effort: lean into the strange glitching and I won't be too upset.

Not everything is a war between those in favor and those against…

If you benchmark is to be better than a human familiar with the task at hand, then you will be disappointed.

If you are not expecting them to be as good as people then their failures seem wholly unremarkable. The specific nature of tbe failures can be quite interesting in fact. They can expose deficiencies in the architecrure, training data, or presumptiona of those controlling the models.

In my experience very few people are claiming the capabulities that would be required for me to expect them to produce better than they currenrly are.

I'm not bothered by a fish's inability to quote Shakespeare.

> I'm not bothered by a fish's inability to quote Shakespeare.

But I am bothered when they put a pencil in the mouth of a fish and tell us that this is the future of literature, that this qualifies as playwright, and that theaters will soon begin putting on plays written by a fish with a pencil in its mouth.

"Fish are going to make your job, and most jobs, obsolete within the year" I say for the fourth year in a row. I'm pretending to talk to workers, but am actually indirectly addressing my fish investors trying to scare them into thinking fish are too world-changing of an opportunity to pass up.

Every talk show then has to have me on. It would be one thing if I was boasting about the fish, but scared of it? Well then surely there must be something important going on there. I begin:

"Don't worry. Be happy"

But they are not claiming that current models are better than humans but later developments might.

Do you think that a descendant of a fish could be a playwright or put on a play?

Objectively no. Fish form animals have been around far longer than mammals and we've touched the moon.

Well I would expect them to have been around for longer if they were to be ancestors of mammals.

Taking your logic to its conclusion fishes (or descendants of fish) regularly recite Shakespeare.

However there is a major flaw in your logic. Fishes (or their descendants) reciting Shakespeare is part of natural history. AI making quality music videos is just a prediction (or maybe even just wishful thinking). The former has occurred and has been observed, the later has not. So you are comparing nature with science fiction.

> Taking your logic to its conclusion fishes (or descendants of fish) regularly recite Shakespeare.

I believe that was the point.

Eh, I'd like to see YOU make a better music video for $100 or less!

This is such a bad argument:

a) You are allowed to dislike cheap stuff, in fact it is common in western culture to dislike art where it is obvious that the artist cheaped out.

b) Never in the history of western art critique has there been a requirement that the critic is able to do better then the artist (let alone for cheaper). As the saying goes, “I may not be able to pilot a 100000 ton cargo ship, but I can tell when one is stuck in a canal.”

I remember when my friends in middle school were making DBZ fight scene music videos with iMovie and Movie Maker. They were way better than this and did not cost $100.

I'm not claiming that no one can make a better music video for $100. I'm claiming that a random member of the HN peanut gallery can't make a better music video for $100. :)

If you don’t count the cost of the phone I think many people could. See, it would look like it cost $100, but that’s still better than using AI to generate something that looks like the temu version of a $500,000 video.

I have done a few - even if very amateurish, still learning, on the side, for saxophone covers. Budget was basically just transportation to the location. I don't count the price of my equipment in the budget because I'm also not counting the price of a datacenter here.

You are also discounting your time which is not fair

Been done many times before. E.g. https://youtu.be/lLYD_-A_X5E?is=DqNgAGlosIXO9z3V

or i can just not do it? this absolute garbage of a music video is not worth a single cent, let alone a $100.

What do you mean, I thought it was fun.

Feel free to not make your own music videos, but I am not sure why you would be so upset about other people having fun.

People say this a lot, and I usually think it's said by folks who haven't thought about it much.

As a person who makes a lot of music, I don't care if folks have fun. In fact I am having such a hard time caring hat folks do or how they do it I can't get motivated to book any shows this season.

But the part you're missing is when folks make these things and then say "yeah, you see this thing we're doing? That's what we think -you- are doing." LIke when someone sets up an LLM to shit out some song lyrics, I don't care if they are having fun doing it, but I think it displays a lot of contempt for [insert an songwriting artist youlike here] to claim that the LLM is doing the same thing.

Which is fine and all- I've got plenty of unmitigated contempt for my fellow humans.

And you don't even need a computer to do that- I've released a certain amount of music that is facile and boring and in retrospect understand why folks were dismissive.

But if you want to understand why folks who consider themselves invested in their craft (or even invested in other artists' craft) are dismissive of these things, then you might consider how radically dismissive of craft these kinds of cultural products might seem to artists.

"or i can just not do it", because you can't! To much pride to admit that the bot beats your ass every day of the week ten times over when it comes to making music videos so the cop out is "nah, man, I just don't wanna."

I don't think its that bad, you are just hater

The Ugly.

Nintendo is great for children, yes. I wish there were something like them for a more mature audience.

What does this mean exactly? Because Mature games are designed to appeal to 14 year old boys.

Are you referring to some kind of David Lynch of gaming?

Yeah, I don't mean "mature" in the sense of the rating system, which does in fact mean "made for 14-year-old boys."

I don't like or understand David Lynch, but you get what I'm trying to say. There is no one in the video game landscape doing something similar to what Welles or Kurosawa did in cinema, or what Yorgos Lanthimos and Ari Aster are doing now (or Matt Reeves and Guillermo del Toro, if you're not into arthouse stuff).

Every time someone argues about this, they cite the same old examples (Disco Elysium, Outer Wilds, some narrative indie game)... but those examples usually lack in gameplay, which is, in my opinion, the most important part of what makes a video game its own medium.

I hope to see in my lifetime someone do to video games what the French did to cinema in the 50s and the Americans did in the 60s: graduating the medium from a disposable entertainment artifact into an art form for the ages. The medium is still young, it's not impossible.

I feel like these games exist- they just aren't popular, or are typically subpar in one way or another. The problem is that I feel like video games have become like music- there is innovation happening in genres, but there are so many and have fragmented off so much that I cant really recommend to you a game I find to be genius because there's a good chance that you can't appreciate the gameplay. That's not a knock on you or anyone else as a gamer.

like story driven games that Sony is famous for. Imagine a Spiderman, a last of us, or Uncharted. Large story driven games largely for older 30-40 year old market

Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll... not quite 14 but close.

That's just cultural elitism. I hope you meet someone in your life who finds absolute joy in reading young adult romance novels or D&D fantasy books so you can understand how irrelevant "good" literature is. I love Dostoevsky and Verne (and D&D novels, especially those written by R.A. Salvatore), but I would never judge the modern "IPs" that got my daughter into reading.

> best literature

What does that even mean?

Everyone has their own opinion as to what the best literature is, just like what the best music is.

But there is also some consensus. For music it would be Beethoven, Mozart, the Beatles, etc.

For literature it would include Tolstoy, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Dickens, Austen, Tolkien, and many more. I would bet it will eventually include Stephen King but it's too early to make that call now.

There is no such consensus. Those are just popular answers coming from people with eurocentric tastes over the last couple of centuries. Millions in the global south would swap The Beatles for Celia Cruz or Fela Kuti. People in Asia from the 1700s to this day would tell you Tyagaraja is a way better composer than Beethoven and Mozart put together... he is a literal saint in India, actually.

Not to mention, many people would disregard your answer for putting Stephen King (and Tolkien, to a lesser extent) in the same sentence as Tolstoy and Shakespeare.

There is no "better" anything when we talk about culture. No consensus, etc. There are just opinions.

I know many (including myself) who would never agree to this "consensus"

The best music is Goa trance. What you're referring to as "best" is actually classic music (or as I like to call it, classic plus music :P).

I know programming is what's most important to many in this community, but as an outsider I need to ask: literally WTF is Odin? I mean I know about Java and C++, etc. But Odin? That's what Wikipedia policies are for. It cannot include anything and everything about every single profession, subculture, or interest group.

An anime community would complain that a very influential (but largely unknown and mostly lost) OVA from 1987 should have its own article. A Peruvian community could argue that one of its most celebrated local activists should have his own article. Of course they would, but how could Wikipedia know they are really what they claim if there isn't a standard of what a credible/respectable source is?

That being said, Wikipedia editors are just Reddit mods with delusions of grandeur, so anything that brings them down is fine by me. Grokpedia has the right idea... I actually think that's the future. Too bad it's controlled by a grifting manchild.

> An anime community would complain that a very influential (but largely unknown and mostly lost) OVA from 1987 should have its own article. A Peruvian community could argue that one of its most celebrated local activists should have his own article.

Honestly, both of these would probably meet Wikipedia's notability requirements.

> Wikipedia editors are just Reddit mods with delusions of grandeur

Reddit mods act on their own discretion most of the time, unless they attract the attention of Reddit admins or staff. Anyone can edit Wikipedia and the editing/moderation decisions are transparent. Certainly the editing guidelines are much more rigorous than Reddit, but that's the point of Wikipedia.

> Wikipedia editors are just Reddit mods with delusions of grandeur

In other words, just Reddit mods

Some poor underage girl has been trafficked in the Philippines since she can remember, and it is the only life she will ever know. Roofing 14 hours a day sounds like a pretty sweet gig.

(See? Suffering is not a competition).

No but your little flame war is trying to be without adding anything new to the argument.

HN Guidelines: *Eschew flamebait. Avoid generic tangents.*

TikTok won? YouTube is significantly larger, with over 2.7 billion monthly active users compared to TikTok's 1.6 billion.

Even if you count TikTok's higher average watch time per user, YouTube's broader demographic more than makes up for it.

The website is clearly vibecoded, and that makes me assume the app is also vibecoded. When I open the installer, Edge gives me a warning that the file is not safe. I know that just means the dev hasn't purchased a certificate, but it adds to the general feeling that this is a rushed project that asks 30 dollars for something that I can make with Gemini in about the time it took to write this comment.

I'm pretty sure the dev has good intentions, the app is safe, and it works... but I'm not going to find out because it's too much money and too risky.

It is a good idea, though. I'll check the comments for free, open-source alternatives, but if I don't find one, I'll probably just generate a script that does this when I get back home.

Why do you think AI is making things worse? Please explain.

For me it's that there's less and less soul left in the internet. That trend started before LLMs, but now it also starts appearing in the real world as well. Seeing an AI-generated ad picture in the mall was kind of a wakeup call. So weird seeing the face of a girl that was generated. What about books, art, music? Real artists and creativity get priced out of our societies.

There are plenty of books, art, and music coming out, none of it AI-generated. What are you talking about?

As you said, the internet had slop before AI. It has been that way since SEO and social media started to dictate what people consume. Remember Elsagate? Remember the IRA bot farms? Remember NFT monkey PNGs?

Most books were trash before the internet, and most paintings have been amateur since the dawn of painting. We just don't remember those examples because we only preserve the best from each era.

Even if 99% of books published in the next 50 years turn out to be AI-generated slop (which is probably what's going to happen, to be honest), that 1% would still be more than you could possibly read in your lifetime. That goes for music, video games, and visual art too.

Let the AI bros make their slop. They are of no consequence to actual culture in the long term.

> Are we heading to a world where GPU use is regulated to ensure that illegal LLMs aren't being processed on your machine?

Actually that sounds pretty reasonable considering current regulations regarding almost any other important resource / material that affect the general population.

You Gen-Z people serously need what Free software, Free society meant. We fought against people like you and against treacherous computing. And we will do again.

I'm 43 years old, dude. Stop fighting with people and learn to adapt.
